One of the most notable Polish dendrologists of the second half of the 20th century and, for sure, the most outstanding representative of gardening taxonomic classification (science of systematics and names of species and varieties) and historian of nurseries of that time.
He completed solid practical gardening education during the occupation period; then for his entire life he remained connected with Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW) – especially with its Gardening Department where he worked for years as a professor adored by his students. As a loner, person directly expressing his opinions and extreme individualist hardly observing the bureaucratic norms, he had never been tenured and held the title of docent.
Exceptionally hardworking person with unique ability to write in a clear and concise manner about trees, to take photographs thereof and to present them in a form of scientifically and artistically faithful drawings. He left hundreds of works. The works can be found in his favorite journal – “Dendrology Yearbook” [“Rocznik Dendrologiczny”], organ of the dendrology section of the Polish Dendrology Association – he was one of the pillars thereof for many years. His publications such as “Dendrology” [“Dendrologia”] for students (10 editions and additional printouts since 1960) and “Coniferous Trees and Shrubs” [“Drzewa i krzewy iglaste”] and three volumes of unfortunately uncompleted “Broad-Leaf Trees and Shrubs" [“Drzewa i krzewy liściaste”] are extremely precise and diligently worked out.
In 1956 he became the first Polish member of the elite International Dendrology Society.
Buried in the municipal cemetery in Dąbrowa Górnicza. Honored with two memorial boards – one located on the SGGW campus in Ursynów district (in the old building of the department) and the other one located on the wall of a building in which he lived, at al. Waszyngtona 45/51 in Warsaw.
